Lust vs Like.
Understanding the Difference Between Like and Lust Many women struggle to tell the difference between liking someone and simply feeling lust. This confusion often stems from the way we are raised. Women are taught—explicitly or implicitly—that we should not have sexual urges, or that if we do, something is wrong with us. Because of this, we are not encouraged to understand or own our sexuality, and as a result, we sometimes misinterpret lust as genuine emotional connection. If we were taught more openly about our sexual urges and the realities of sex, I believe we would be better equipped to cut through the noise when dating. Instead, when lust is automatically equated with liking someone, it blinds us. We overlook red flags, excuse poor behavior, and convince ourselves that desire is the same as emotional compatibility. I recently came across a video by Tony Gaskins where he explained the difference between love and lust. As a 31-year-old woman, his words struck me deeply. They made me realize that I’ve often mistaken lust for something more. Looking back, I’ve been in lust far more times than I’ve actually been in genuine “like” with someone. As women, we’ve been socialized to suppress our sexual desires, told that sex should only exist within certain boundaries, or that to acknowledge lust makes us “unladylike.” Because of this conditioning, many of us struggle to admit when we’re simply experiencing desire. Lust is often framed as a masculine trait, but the reality is that women feel it just as much. The difference is that we’re more likely to confuse lust for genuine emotional interest. The truth is that women experience lust, and we need to recognize it for what it is. Only then can we separate fleeting desire from authentic emotional connection. If you’re curious to explore this further, I highly recommend watching Tony Gaskins’ video on the difference between love and lust. It is eye-opening, and for me, it was incredibly enlightening.
