In their quest to find a westward passage to the Indies, the Spanish ended up discovering a far greater prize: the American continent. Although Christopher Columbus was initially the architect and hero, other navigators soon set sail across the Atlantic. For many, it was a one-way trip, as they never returned to Spain, perishing at sea or in the New World. But their names remain in history. In that epic voyage of discovery, where they were no longer just searching for passage to the Indies, but also for the gold and silver treasures so often spoken of by the natives, captains like Amerigo Vespucci, Juan Díaz de Solís, Ferdinand Magellan, Pedro de Mendoza, among many others, were the first to give rise to Argentina, derived from the Latin word argentum, which translates to silver. Our territory, of course, already existed: some twenty indigenous groups inhabited the Pampas, the Litoral, Cuyo, and Patagonia. It is true that Argentina had to wait to be born as a nation-state, but its true discovery dates back to the beginning of the 16th century, under the heroic efforts of the Crown of Castile, to whom we owe the beautiful Castilian language, among other things. Today on Storiopolis, we will travel back to the Columbian era, which sent courageous navigators to discover Argentine soil. These Spaniards, together with local Indigenous people and amidst daunting obstacles, finally succeeded in bringing to life a new history—our own. #history #argentina #america
