earthen / cob floor installation in a mongolian yurt

https://permies.com/floor Follow along as we install a traditional Mongolian yurt with a natural earthen floor, guided by Michael Otten as part of the Low Tech Laboratory 2 movie. Instead of the usual wooden platform, we opted for an earth-coupled design, ensuring a cool space. • Initial Plan: Replace the wooden platform with a natural earthen floor • Stone Ring Foundation: Building a ring of large stones around the yurt's interior to contain the floor • Gravel Layer: Laying the first layer of gravel for optimal drainage and moisture control • Material Collection: Gathering and transporting lemon tree earth for the floor mix • Compaction Process: Compacting every 3 to 5 inches to ensure a solid and stable foundation • Adding Fibers: Mixing fibers into the earth to increase tensile strength and reduce shrinkage cracks • Layering the Earth: Applying and compacting earth on top of the gravel and plastic layers • Smoothing the Surface: Using a wood float and spritz bottle to perfect the surface, removing lines and imperfections • Sealing the Floor: Applying oil, with linseed oil being the most common choice, to protect and finish the surface • Final Touches: The floor provides a cool, comfortable space for stretching, laying down, or exercising, with the added benefit of temperature regulation, staying cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Now, every visitor to Wheaton Labs can experience the unique comfort of this naturally cooled earthen floor, perfectly suited to the yurt’s environment.E Discover the satisfaction of permaculture community living at Wheaton Lab's bootcamp: https://wheaton-labs.com/bootcamp 0:00 yurt installation plan 0:19 ring of rocks 0:26 first layer 0:49 earth layer with fibers 1:16 laying out the floor 1:21 last touches and linseed oil 1:44 the floor is done 2:05 watch the full movie!
