He came to Texas from Virginia in 1837, survived the infamous “Black Bean Incident”, and served in the Mexican-American War and against the Comanche as a Texas Ranger. But, a little known chapter of his life is the story of his time leading a mail train from San Antonio to El Paso, a nearly 1,200 mile round-trip through perhaps the most dangerous territory in America. Wallace completed this trip countless times over the span of a few years, and survived numerous close-calls with the Comanche during that time. But, one particular fight near The Devil’s River in West Texas proved to be the most vicious.
