Choreographic Legacy: The Avant-Garde (VERA PROCA CIORTEA)

''Choreographic Legacy: The Avant-Garde'' is the second episode of the documentary series ''Choreographic Legacy" which presents the activity of another generation of Romanian dancers and choreographers of the 20th century, such as Lizica Codreanu, Iris Barbura, Trixy Checais, Gabriel Negry and Vera Proca Ciortea, who contributed to the configuration of modern Romanian dance. Vera Proca Ciortea (1912 – 2002) While working as a university teaching assistant at National Academy of Physical Education and Sport in Bucharest, Vera Proca Ciortea was awarded a state scholarship for dance studies in Germany. This experience provided the foundation for the creation of a new choreographic style—Romanian rhythmic dance. Over the years, she founded several dance groups, including Grup 14 (1935), Miorița (1957), Gymnasion (1974), and Columna (1982). She was the first ethnocoreology specialist in the country. Together with her team at the Institute of Ethnography and Folklore, she developed a system of dance notation (Ronotation), which enabled her to notate 6600 Romanian folk dances. She served as President of the Study Group for Ethnochoreology for two decades and was an active member of the International Dance Council of UNESCO. Her pedagogical activity spanned three decades, contributing to the training of several generations of actors at The National University of Theatre and Cinematography "I.L. Caragiale" and athletes at National University of Physical Education and Sport, in Bucharest.
