FHS at Home: Innovation in Action - Château de Lalande

French Heritage Society is thrilled to offer this virtual event series in partnership with our Young Patrons Circle, featuring intimate chats in English with dynamic château owners. As the ongoing pandemic has derailed the guest house and events businesses that support the restoration and continual upkeep of many historic properties, creative caretakers have taken advantage of a worldwide captive audience in need of escapism. Using YouTube vlogs, Instagram posts, crowdfunding platforms, and even a British reality show, they have successfully garnered support for their mammoth projects while raising awareness of the wealth of French architectural and cultural heritage still in need of preservation. Our first virtual chat on April 14th featured Stephanie Jarvis of Château de Lalande, the forerunner in the YouTube restoration channel phenomenon. Her property, situated in the heart of the rural Centre-Val de Loire region and co-owned with two friends, dates from the 16th C. Having taken off in 2020, her YouTube channel ‪@TheChateauDiaries‬ boasts 133,000 subscribers. With this large platform, Stephanie has also garnered support for her Patreon crowdfunding site. With over 2900 Patrons, she raises impressive monthly funds for restoration work and is listed in the top 400 Patreon accounts worldwide. The result of this incredible global support, as seen on her channel, have been inspiring as the necessary restoration work has moved forward by leaps and bounds this year. Stephanie discussed her successes in the larger context of how historic properties have been funded in the past, and how maverick models such as hers could inspire the future.
