The space between the stator and the rotor is called the air gap. The stator constitutes the static part and the rotor the moving part. The stator is composed of thin sheets of heat-treated magnetic steel or silicon steel to minimize losses due to eddy currents and hysteresis. These sheets have the shape of a ring with internal grooves (front view) so that windings can be housed, which in turn, when in operation, should create a magnetic field in the stator. The rotor is also composed of thin sheets of heat-treated magnetic steel, also ring-shaped (front view), with the windings housed longitudinally. There are two types of induction motors: Three-phase induction motor, short-circuited rotor (squirrel cage type): In which the rotor is composed of bars of conductive material located around the rotor laminations, short-circuited by metal rings at the ends. (Model shown in the video). Three-phase induction motor, wound rotor: In which the rotor is composed of windings distributed around the rotor laminations. Construction: The induction motor is the simplest motor to construct. Stator and rotor are mounted together, with a common shaft to the "rings" that compose them. The stator consists of a three-phase winding uniformly distributed around the machine body, so that the magnetic flux resulting from the application of voltage to the stator winding produces a particularly sinusoidal waveform. The electromagnetic wave produced by the winding is a sinusoidal function of space and time. Operating principle: Rotating magnetic field as the sum of three vectors. The application of alternating voltage to the stator windings will produce a time-varying magnetic field which, due to the uniform distribution of the stator winding, will generate a rotating resultant magnetic field at a speed proportional to the frequency of the three-phase network. The rotating magnetic flux in the stator will cross the air gap and, being time-varying, will induce alternating voltage in the three-phase rotor winding. As the rotor windings are short-circuited, this induced voltage will cause a current to circulate through the rotor winding, which consequently will produce a magnetic flux in the rotor that will try to align itself with the rotating magnetic field of the stator. Since the values of the induced voltages in the rotor in the case of a wound rotor depend on the turns ratio between the rotor and the stator, the stator can be considered the primary of a transformer and the rotor its secondary.
