The golden age of European ocean exploration – also known as the Age of Discovery – transformed international trade and commerce and laid the seeds for the world we live in today. The 15th and 16th centuries, in particular, saw Portugal and Spain then Britain, France and Holland discover new trade routes and establish colonies throughout Africa, South Asia, and the Americas. This was the period that produced some of the most famous explorers ever known – Columbus, Da Gama, Magellan. Of course, all of this is common knowledge. But how did they do it?
