The Gongkhar La Expedition: A 2-Year Journey to the Forbidden Lake In 2024, we came across a post by Arunachal Pradesh Tourism showcasing the breathtaking beauty of Mago Valley and Gongkhar La Lake. The moment we saw those mesmerizing landscapes, a dream was born — to witness this hidden paradise with our own eyes. That dream became a plan when my friend Utpal Kalita and I decided to explore this unexplored corner of Arunachal Pradesh. Chapter 1: In January 2025, we started our journey towards Mago Valley and Gongkhar La Lake. The drive was smooth until Jung, Arunachal Pradesh. But after that, the real adventure began. There was no mobile network, no route information, and even Google Maps had no details about the destination. We asked a few locals at the starting point, but surprisingly, they were also unaware of the place and few the exact route. With only our determination and curiosity, we continued ahead, discovering the path ourselves. The journey towards Mago was beyond imagination. The untouched mountains, breathtaking valleys, and the raw beauty of Arunachal Pradesh left us speechless. We finally reached Mago and continued towards Chuna — the gateway to Gongkhar La Lake. But destiny had another plan. The roads ahead were completely covered with heavy snow, and the Indian Army advised us to return due to the dangerous road conditions. Our dream remained incomplete. Gongkhar La Lake was only around an hour away, but we had to turn back from Chuna with a promise — we would return again. Chapter 2: In 2026, we started this expedition once more. This time, we were joined by three more friends. The weather was different, the snow was less, and the road conditions allowed us to continue our journey. Finally, we reached Gongkhar La Lake. Standing there in front of that incredible landscape was an unforgettable moment. The crystal-clear lake, mighty mountains, and untouched wilderness made us realise how beautifully nature creates places that feel almost unreal.
