Vaihingen an der Enz virtual tour. Welcome to Vaihingen. Vaihingen may date back as far as 799 AD, but the documents are not clear. In 1252 documents refer directly to Vaihingen as a town, established by Count Gottfried von Vaihingen. This town was besieged in Thirty years war by both Protestants and Catholics. In 1944 a Vaihingen concentration camp has been set up nearby as part of a secret program known as Stoffel to relocate Messerschmitt manufacturing plants underground, protected from Allied bombing raids. The prisoners here worked 12 hours a day on starvation diets, and mortality rates were high. By the fall of 1944 operation Stoffel was abandoned and most of the prisoners reassigned to other camps, notably Bisingen, Hessental, Dautmergen, or Unterriexingen. The Wiesengrund camp retained some slave laborers, but became a destination for sick prisoners who were effectively left there to die. On 7 April 1945 the camp was formally liberated by the 1st French army.
