On February 26, 1991, nine American M1A1 Abrams tanks drove into the Iraqi Republican Guard's Tawakalna Division and destroyed it in twenty three minutes. The Battle of 73 Easting is the most exhaustively reconstructed tank engagement in history, and almost everything most people believe about it is wrong. This deep dive documentary tells the full story: how Captain H.R. McMaster crossed his limit of advance without permission and apologized on the radio while he did it; why the Iraqi commander, a graduate of the U.S. Infantry Officer Advanced Course, built a textbook reverse slope defense that should have worked; and why it didn't. The answer was not the Abrams gun and it was not the armor. It was thermal imaging, GPS, and a training center in the Mojave Desert where American crews had already lost this battle hundreds of times.
