I went to the Yaegaki Shrine Gion Festival again this year. Water was relentlessly poured on not only the mikoshi (portable shrines) but also on the spectators. My camera and clothes were soaked. The main mikoshi that appeared were located in Higashihonmachi, Nishihonmachi, Yokomachi, Fukutomimachi, Tamachi, Kami-Dewa, Shimo-Dewa, and Nakamachi. History of the Gion Festival According to an ancient document housed at the Mitokuji Temple, "The Gion Festival began around 1697 (Genroku 10), when the head priest Mitokuji Temple began holding a festival every year using Tenno-gu's rice." This can be seen as the origin of the Gion Festival. Furthermore, another ancient document states, "In June 1713 (Shotoku 3)," the mikoshi was first carried in front of the shrine gate." It appears that mikoshi began to be carried around this time. As the mikoshi (portable shrine) begins to move to the accompaniment of lively flute and drum music, a spirited call of "Anrya doshita" (What a great day!) echoes throughout the town. The movements of the people carrying the mikoshi, perfectly synchronized with the rhythm of the festival music, along with these calls, create a truly impressive and captivating sight. This sense of unity between the festival music and the mikoshi is a rare and unique feature of the Yaegaki Shrine Gion Festival, even across Japan.
