Hiking Kepa, 2143m — Karawanks Hidden Gem — Slovenia

Kepa sits at 2143m on the border between Slovenia and Austria, deep in the Karawanks. Not as famous as the peaks across the valley in the Julian Alps, but the views over there are absolutely worth the climb. The route starts from the valley, winding through forest paths and open Alpine pastures before things get a bit more serious higher up. You pass a natural spring, cross some open slopes with increasingly panoramic views, and hit an exposed gully with fixed ropes; nothing too wild, but it keeps you focused. If you're curious, there's a quick off-trail scramble to the Gubno summit on the way. The final ridge to the summit of Kepa is wide open and grassy, with the Julian Alps stretching out in front of you and Austria dropping away on the other side. A great day hike in the Karawanks, not overcrowded, not too technical, but with enough variety to make it a proper mountain day. Shot with GoPro11 - June 2026 Instagram @mirkohikes
