2020 Southeastern Showhouse | Melanie Turner [Interview]

Follow along as we sit down with designer Melanie Turner to discuss her interior design inspiration in the 2020 Southeastern Showhouse family room and breakfast room. Surrounded by three walls of iron glass windows, Melanie says the family room reminds her of a lantern or a greenhouse. Because of that, she decided to make it more modern and amplify the indoor-outdoor design appeal. Of utmost importance, however, was making sure the room resembled the Santa Barbara-style architecture in a fresh, light way. Italian colors such as terra-cotta and green in pillows, art, textiles and sprinkled moss add a soothing touch of color to the natural backdrop. The most beautiful, but understandably the most challenging part of the space, was figuring out how to design with no walls. Melanie found creative hacks for common household items, such as putting the television on an easel. Maybe the most fun part of the family room, says Melanie, was custom designing comfortable, sculptural furniture, including oversize chaise lounges. Mid-century modern elements (like sculptures, artwork and decorative elements) contribute to the edited, yet layered room design.
