Phimosis is a fairly common and well-known condition, specifically the inability of the glans of the penis to be properly retracted due to an excess of foreskin. Phimosis, as such, is the tightness of the foreskin that prevents the glans from being retracted. All boys are born with phimosis, as it is a natural protective mechanism for the glans. However, over time, this foreskin gradually stretches to allow the glans to be exposed. However, a boy is generally considered to have phimosis requiring treatment around the age of four. It's important to understand that while it is something all boys have from birth, it usually resolves on its own, but sometimes it doesn't, and that's when treatment is necessary. Before surgery, there is the option of treating phimosis with a corticosteroid cream, which helps to loosen the foreskin. If this treatment fails, or if after a few months without applying the cream it becomes difficult to retract the foreskin again, surgery will be performed.
