Anyone wanting to build in Austria today often faces prohibitively expensive plots of land. Prices are skyrocketing, especially around cities. In the Vorarlberg districts of Bregenz and Dornbirn, a square meter of building land cost an average of €740 last year. Only those who inherit property can still afford their dream of homeownership. Building leases offer an alternative. What has been common practice in eastern Austria for some time is now becoming a topic of discussion in western Austria as well. Instead of buying the land, it is "leased" for 10 to 100 years – often from the church or municipality. This makes the costs more manageable, but there are also several drawbacks.
