Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, the "Polish question" entered its final stage: Poland stood on the threshold of independence and national integrity. However, the proclamation of an independent Polish state in 1918 was not painless. The redivision of the Russian Empire's territorial legacy gave rise to the Polish-Ukrainian and Soviet-Polish wars. These wars were effectively ended by the Treaty of Riga in 1921.
