Pungnap Earthen Fortress of the Lost Kingdom of Baekje! It is well known that Baekje's first capital was Hanseong. However, the location of this first capital, Wiryeseong, has been controversial from the Goryeo Dynasty to recent times. However, since 1997, a massive excavation of early Baekje artifacts at an apartment construction site in Songpa-gu, Seoul, has solidified the identity of Pungnap Earthen Fortress as Wiryeseong of Hanseong Baekje. What artifacts unearthed from Pungnap Earthen Fortress have finally settled this controversy? Hanseong Baekje, Restoring Lost Ancient Korean History The Records of the Three Kingdoms (Samgukji Weizhi Dongyijeon), known for its detailed depiction of the Korean Peninsula in the 3rd century, portrays Baekje during this period not as an ancient state but as a small tribal state without any substantial fortifications. However, radiocarbon dating to determine the construction date of Pungnap Earthen Fortress has confirmed that Hanseong Baekje had grown into an ancient kingdom by at least the 2nd century, capable of mobilizing a million people to undertake national civil engineering projects. Moreover, artifacts unearthed from Pungnap Earthen Fortress suggest that Hanseong Baekje possessed the grandeur of an ancient state and was at the center of East Asia's logistics network... Wooden Well, Reconstructing the Lifestyles of the Hanseong Baekje People A wooden well, intricately woven from wood, was discovered outside the eastern wall of Pungnap Earthen Fortress. While wells made of stone and wood have been excavated before, this is the first such fully wooden well. The discovery of this well suggests that many people lived both inside and outside the fortress. How did the Hanseong Baekje people live outside the fortress?
