The Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU), KH Yahya Cholil Staquf, familiarly known as Gus Yahya, emphasized that there was no interference from the Palace regarding the 35th NU Congress, which will be held at the Tambakberas Islamic Boarding School in Jombang, East Java, from August 27 to 31, 2026. Gus Yahya also confirmed that none of the PBNU Chairman candidates received direct support from President Prabowo Subianto, as neither the government nor the president has any vested interest in NU. "I don't see any interest from the President or the Palace, for example, in influencing or interfering with NU. What's the point? It's of no use to the government. It's of no use to the president himself, for that matter," Gus Yahya said in a press conference in the lobby of the PBNU building on Jalan Kramat Raya 164, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (July 14, 2026). "And if anyone claims that they have the President's blessing, or even orders, that's definitely a lie," he emphasized. However, Gus Yahya did not deny that there have been parties trying to disrupt the peace of NU, but these issues have been resolved maturely within NU itself. "There are parties who want to intervene, wanting this, wanting that. Well, that's normal in society, with parties with their own interests, and perhaps this has been attempted. But we can see evidence that NU has consistently maintained its independence. It has maintained its maturity to resolve and process the dynamics of this organization in a mature and independent manner," he concluded.
