Auto racing is a melting pot of diverse interests that collide on a race weekend. From car manufacturers, to accessory suppliers, oil companies, racetrack operators, and sponsors, to associations and interest groups, everyone wants to have a say, and everyone wants to engage in a bit of politics in their own interests. Often, the spokespeople for the largest companies are the ones with the most weighty voices because they have the most money to distribute. And then there was Bilstein racing services manager Hugo Emde, the almost all-powerful eminence in the paddock, and his "Café Emstein," an old racing transporter from which he made big politics. There had never been anything like it before, and there probably never will be again. This opinion is shared not only by Rainer Braun, but by many who experienced Hugo Emde back then and who, like Harald Grohs, owe their careers to him. Emde didn't need money; he had influence, he could open doors, but he could also slam them in your face if you didn't align with his views.
