The Positive Grid Spark MINI Vai amp not only offers four presets devised by the imagination of Steve Vai—as well as built-in backing tracks from his musical catalog—but it also struts his visual vibe with an exclusive Mandala grille, burgundy tolex and a 10' burgundy weave instrument cable. The compact, 10-watt stereo combo includes a rechargeable battery (up to 8 hours of unplugged playtime), Bluetooth streaming and compatibility with the Spark app (more than 100,000 available tones, Smart Jam tracks and editing tools). The Spark app also unleashes the Spark AI Beta, which constructs tones based on a description you can type in or speak—talk about letting your creativity run amok. “I usually take three Spark MINI Vai amps on tour,” says iconic guitarist and composer Steve Vai. “There’s one backstage, one on the tour bus, and one in my luggage for the hotel room. You just plug in and it sounds good. I was asked to write some presets for the amp—sort of my desert island tone gathering—and I came up with a clean tone called Fresh, and Mild, which is self-explanatory. Then, I have Hot for more gain and Fire for solos. The Hot setting is what I normally use to warm up. But I also like the Spark AI Beta feature, which gives you four tonal options based on whatever you say. I’ll ask it for ‘sultry smooth twilight’ or ‘gigantic monsters that live under the bed,’ and get some cool sounds, as well as the signal paths used for each tone.
