Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna (EARLIEST KNOWN LIVE RECORDING) [San Francisco, 1965]

Running a YouTube channel is incredibly time-consuming and I do not profit from it due to copyright reasons. If you would like to support my projects, please consider donating to my Patreon:   / swinginpig  . Occasionally, I will upload rare tracks exclusively for Patreon subscribers. This concert is regarded by some as one of Dylan's greatest. It was recorded by Allen Ginsberg on December 11, 1965. I had uploaded this entire concert a while back, but I had to take it down, unfortunately. However, in the next week, I will upload the entire unreleased concert as well as the San Jose concert a day later, including many minutes of backstage conversation between Ginsberg, Dylan, and Albert Grossman (Dylan's manager), as well as interviews Ginsberg conducts on the audience (they offer a fascinating insight into how the young people views him at this pivotal moment his career). The entire tape is nearly four hours, I believe. It'll blow your socks off! This might be the debut performance of "Visions of Johanna." It was so new at the time that Dylan hadn't finalized a name for it yet. In the beginning, you can hear him call it "Freeze Out," and "Alcatraz to the 9th Power Revisited" (Alcatraz is a famous prison on the San Francisco Bay). An unnamed Dylanologist supposedly unearthed these tapes from a collection that Ginsberg had donated to Stanford University before he died. Here is what he said about this track: "First recorded live performance and in the conversation for the definitive live version, epic, introduced as "Alcatraz to the 9th Power Revisited", has the nightingale's code line, hard to make out but he appears to tell the audience that "I sang this song last week in concert" - which would likely mean he played Visions at Berkeley." The audio is incredibly clear for a 1965 tape recorder; Ginsberg spent $500 on this "absolutely beautiful precision machine," about $4,000 in today's money. Nonetheless, I cleaned up the sound a bit with audio software to make it even more listenable. Enjoy this gem while you can! Love & Peace, ~SP
