Shinjuku Station boasts the world's highest average daily passenger traffic, at approximately 3.5 million. Located a three-minute walk from the east exit along Shinjuku Street is Kinokuniya Bookstore Shinjuku. Since its founding in 1927 (Showa 2), the store has continued to grow alongside Shinjuku's development as a hub of information and culture. The Kinokuniya Building, with its distinctive exterior and walk-through first floor, was completed in 1964. In 2017, it was designated a historic building by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Since 2019, work has been underway to reinforce the building's earthquake resistance. Aiming for a reopening in the fall of 2022, Kinokuniya Bookstore Shinjuku is working hard to create a "new, long-established bookstore" while preserving the historic building. "The second floor, accessible via the escalator from Shinjuku Street, is the face of Kinokuniya Shinjuku Main Store. We've always had a proud literature section there, but it's currently being temporarily relocated to the fourth floor due to construction. The literature section is a glamorous genre, but our staff are incredibly unique and specialize in creating truly thoughtful displays and presentations, so we hope you'll take a look at that. We hold various fairs, both large and small, not just on the fourth floor, and display handmade panels and pop-ups by our staff, so we hope you'll take a look at those, too." Upon joining Kinokuniya, employees are taught that "a bookstore is a theater," "books are actors, and bookstore staff are directors." Yoshino explains that Kinokuniya staff believe that "books have power" and that "encounters with books enrich people." Kinokuniya Bookstore was founded in 1927 by founder Shigekazu Tanabe with a sales floor space of 122 sq. meters and five employees at the current flagship store's location. Since then, the business has continued to expand, expanding overseas with the opening of its first international store, the San Francisco branch, in 1969. Today, Kinokuniya has grown into one of the world's leading bookstores, with 69 stores in Japan and 42 overseas. "I believe that in the future, more and more international customers will come to Shinjuku, having first discovered Kinokuniya overseas and wondering what Kinokuniya's flagship store is like. Our mission is to create a flagship store that satisfies these international customers, making it a 'Kinokuniya Bookstore of the World.'"
