Unforgettable Moments from Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks

The 1980s were the golden age of gamebooks, an era when interactive storytelling, roleplaying and epic illustrations combined to create unforgettable reading experiences. Series like Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf, Sorcery and many others turned readers into adventurers, heroes, and explorers of branching storylines. In this video, we’ll revisit the most iconic interior illustrations and story moments that defined these interactive books. From the peril of spiked monsters to eerie ruined monasteries, these gamebook scenes captured our imagination and stayed with us long after we closed the covers. Unlike our last episode, which focused on gamebook covers, this time we dive into the interior pictures and passages that shaped our childhood memories of interactive fiction. Artists like Russ Nicholson, Gary Chalk, John Blanche and others gave visual form to the dangers, wonders, and choices of gamebooks, making the experience more than words on a page. Their illustrations weren’t just decoration, they were signposts of danger, portals to fantasy worlds, and sparks for endless daydreams. In this video we’ll focus on Fighting Fantasy books created by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, and if you enjoy this format, we’ll review other series too. I’ll share which illustrations haunted me as a kid, which ones I appreciate now as an adult, and explain why these moments mattered so much to an entire generation of readers. 👉 What were the gamebook scenes or illustrations that stuck with you the most?
