How Mutual Aid Works (and Why You Should Care)
Hey everyone, it's been a while since we last talked. I've been dealing with some health issues related to my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS). If you're unfamiliar, EDS is notoriously difficult to get diagnosed and treated due to lack of research and understanding in the medical community. Recently, I came across a powerful video by @Ember_Green titled "EDS & Why We Misunderstand Disability" which resonated deeply with me. It shed light on the struggles of living with invisible illnesses like EDS and the challenges of getting proper support and understanding. Check it out here: • EDS & Why We Misunderstand Disability During this time, I've had to navigate the complexities of short-term disability and the difficulty of getting accommodations at work. It's frustrating to have to prove my illness to skeptics and deal with the invasive nature of the process. I'm hoping to return to working for myself full-time, where I can better manage my health concerns. While on short-term disability, I've been exploring other creative outlets like video art and DJing for Palestinian solidarity. Despite not feeling inspired to create YouTube content, I've been engaging with topics like mutual aid on TikTok. Today, I want to discuss what mutual aid is, its principles, and how it can empower communities. Mutual aid is about solidarity, cooperation, and supporting each other's needs without relying on traditional structures or charity. It's inclusive, participatory, and seeks to address systemic injustices. However, it's crucial to ensure mutual aid initiatives are accessible and inclusive to all members of the community. Join me as we delve into the importance of mutual aid and how it can create more just and equitable societies. Let's learn together and find ways to support each other in these challenging times.
