2025 Matric Results | Challenges in uptake of maths & other STEM subjects: Dr Mamokgethi Phakeng
While the Department of Basic Education is celebrating the record-breaking 88% matric pass rate for the class of 2025, Minister Siviwe Gwarube says the country is still failing to produce enough learners with strong maths skills. Only 34% of the 927 000 candidates took the subject last year, down from 38% in 2024. She is also concerned with the pass rate which stood at 64%.To examine why the uptake of maths and other STEM subjects remains a challenge in public schools, we are joined by seasoned academic and Former UCT Vice Chancellor, Dr Mamokgethi Phakeng.
