Khem Lata Wakhlu (86) is a veteran mainstream politician from the Kashmir Valley who functioned as Minister of Tourism in Chief Minister Ghulam Mohammad Shah's Cabinet in 1984-86. In 1983, she was inducted as a nominated member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah's recommendation. In less than a year, she was among the 13 J&K National Conference MLAs who caused a split in the party with complete support from Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's Congress party, got Farooq Abdullah dismissed and his rebel brother-in-law Ghulam Mohammad Shah installed as the new Chief Minister. Until the end of G.M. Shah's Congress-NC (Khalida) coalition government in 1986, she remained actively associated with this party. After losing her last Assembly election from Sonwar in 2014, she did not participate in any political activity.
