When the snake charmer stopped at Kandwal in Nurpur, the king had the snake charmer free her and return her to her original home in Bhadwar. Nagni Mata is also known as Surasa Mata, the goddess of snakes. When the dream broke, he saw a real stream of milk flowing, which is now the drain running alongside the temple. Following the instructions of the Mother Goddess, he applied milk mixed with mud to his body and was cured of leprosy… Among the numerous fairs celebrated throughout the year in Himachal, the Nagni Mata Fair is the only fair in the state that lasts for the longest period, spanning two months. It is celebrated every Saturday of the months of Shravan and Bhadrapada at the Nagni Mata Temple in Kodhi-Tika. People believe that receiving the blessings of Nagni Mata at the fair relieves one from the fear of snake bites and other poisonous insects. Nagni Mata is considered a form of Mansa Mata. There are many folklores about the history of this temple. According to a popular legend regarding the temple's establishment, the present Mata Nagni Temple used to be surrounded by dense forests. It is said that an old man suffering from leprosy lived in this forest and constantly prayed to God for relief from his leprosy. Upon his successful meditation, he had a vision of Nagni Mata and saw a stream of milk flowing in the drain. When the dream broke, he saw the stream of milk flowing in real form, which is currently in the form of a drain flowing along the temple. Here snake goddess Nagni Mata is worshipped. People come here from far off places especially for treatment of Snake Bite cases. The treatment is done with sacred soil application on bite mark and making patient drink a solution of sacred soil and sacred water. According to belief of local people, many people have been cured even those who didn't respond to modern treatment. If sacred soil is kept in house, then snake and scorpions don't enter the house. Sacred water here is believed to be cure of many skin diseases. According to local people, lakhs of people have benefited from it. According to local priests, Mata still appears here in the form of thin golden yellow snake once after couple of weeks to bless the devotees.
