There is only the moon-bearing bamboo, glowing once a month, and a well that reflects nothing, even under a full moon. Someone walks deeper into the grove. A hand reaches toward the base of the glowing bamboo, then stops — it hasn't begun to glow yet. They take the long way around the Five Marks, five hollows in the ground that never fade with the seasons. The green scent of freshly cut bamboo carries a faint trace of something burnt, though no one left here remembers why. When the moonlit wind crosses the grove, something stirs inside the bamboo like a rattling medicine seed, and the sound falls onto the well's still surface, becoming melody for the first time. A single string, strung between two stalks and touched by no one, rings high and brief — just once tonight. Only that echo slips through the gaps in the bamboo, and then it is gone. A voice, belonging to no one in particular, moves through the sound of the wind: "What is left behind is not what was abandoned — it is what remains." The princess is no longer here.
