I walked around Izumozaki, a town under the Tenryo system, known for its gabled streets. Izumozaki has long been a bustling post town on the Hokkoku Kaido road, and in the Edo period it was considered important as a landing point for gold and silver from Sado, and was a direct territory of the shogunate (Tenryo) where a magistrate's office was located. At the time, it was divided into two towns, Izumozaki Honmachi (Sumiyoshi-cho, Ishii-cho, Haguro-cho) and Amise (Iwafune-cho, Inari-cho, Ise-cho), each of which had its own headman (Tachibanaya and Kyoya), and a large gate was set up between the two towns. Izumozaki was also a port town that produced many wealthy merchants as a port of call for Kitamae ships, and after the Meiji period, Japan's first oil well was discovered here, making it known as the "birthplace of modern Japanese oil." Incidentally, the oil mining company that later became Nippon Oil, now ENEOS. Izumozaki's gabled streets, which stretch for about 4km, are a characteristic of Tenryo towns, where frontage was limited. At the time, taxes were imposed on the width of the frontage, so the streets were lined with narrow frontages (2 or 3.5 ken) and long gabled houses. Furthermore, on both ends of the town, there are "masugata" areas, where the road bends twice at right angles, remaining as relics of medieval strategic points and post towns. The scenery changes completely near the center of the settlement, with flat-fronted merchant houses, inns, and the mansions of wealthy merchants who prospered from the shipping industry continuing on through the streets, but beyond that the gabled streets begin again.
