The Alps span seven countries in Europe. Opened in 1854, the Semmering Railway was the first railroad to cross this great mountain range. Using bridges and tunnels, it was the highest railroad in the world at the time. It was truly the pioneer of mountain railroads. The line connected Vienna, the capital of the Habsburg Empire, with the Mediterranean Sea. Remarkably, little has changed in more than 150 years. This video, shot with powerful aerial photography, brings to life the fascination of the world’s first trans-Alpine railroad! The route has remained virtually unchanged since its opening, incorporating the best of mid-19th century civil engineering technology. The most difficult part of the route was the 800-meter-long Weinzettel Wall. In an era when there was no dynamite, the tunnels were dug by hand. When this major construction project was completed by the 20,000 workers who were mobilized, it was the highest railroad in the world. Of its countless bridges, the most beautiful is the Kalte Rinne Viaduct. Its two-tiered arches are like a Roman aqueduct! Enjoy this romantic Alpine mountain railroad!
