With over 25 years of experience working with terrazzo and concrete, I’m excited to share the basics of installing a terrazzo floor with you. This video is an overview of the process—future videos may dive into the finer details of this elaborate craft. The Terrazzo Installation Process: The installation involves three main stages: 1️⃣ Floor Prep and Divider Layout 2️⃣ Pouring and Placing the Terrazzo 3️⃣ Grinding, Polishing, and Finishing Stage 1: Prep and Layout Preparing the surface is crucial: grinding, shot blasting, or scarifying ensures proper bonding. The floor is leveled and primed, typically using an epoxy with a sand broadcast for adhesion. Divider strips (brass or zinc, in various sizes) are installed. These strips help with crack control, define patterns or color separations, and act as start-and-stop points for large pours. Stage 2: Pouring and Placing Accurate measuring is key—always have 20% extra material on hand. The pour thickness depends on the aggregate size, and you can customize colors, blends, and even add decorative materials. Knockouts can be included for specific features, then back-poured later for precision. Stage 3: Grinding and Polishing After flattening the floor, the aggregate is evenly exposed through grinding. Slurry and patching remove pinholes, ensuring a smooth finish. The final steps are polishing and sealing for a durable, beautiful surface.
