In the sixth technical episode of our acclaimed series "It's Cheaper on Pasture," we presented the key to high-performance forage production. After discussing topics such as planning, plant selection, height management, and fertilization, the series—based on the work of renowned professors and animal scientists Janaína Martuscello and Manoel Santos—highlighted strategic supplementation as the real icing on the cake for intensified meat and milk production. The episode debunked the myth that supplements are meant to replace pasture forage. In fact, in efficient livestock farming, the math works the other way around: pasture should always be the base and the basal diet of the cattle; the better the management and quality of the grass, the less dependence and expense there will be on feedlots, paving the way for producing the cheapest arroba (unit of weight) on the market. Supplements should complement what is lacking in the grass leaves, in the appropriate quantity and at the right time, and not replace the volume the animal needs to ingest. Want to know more?
