This mountain is believed to be a sacred place for the Tarumanegara Kingdom and later the Pajajaran Kingdom. Many historical/spiritual relics are associated with Sri Baduga Maharaja or King Siliwangi. Locals believe that this mountain is the place where the king "disappeared" (ngahyang) after his kingdom collapsed. At the foot of Mount Salak stands one of the largest temples in Indonesia, built to honor his ancestors and the figure of Prabu Siliwangi.
