The history of Latin America is poorly told in schools. Lies and illusions create false national heroes, and the versions taught are clearly distorted in the interests of local elites—who don't want the people to know their true history. Eduardo Galeano, like so many others, told true stories, exposing the great villains and the countless victims. And, like so many others, he was persecuted, threatened with death, and banished from his country. After reading this book, I spent several years rereading it, skimming at any moment, on any page I happened to open "at random." Always lessons, profound and full of feelings of solidarity, nonconformity, and sensitivity in the interpretations of situations across the territories. All of this with a subtle, cutting, and disconcerting irony. Galeano wrote this preface for the 2010 edition.
