Charles III of Spain (1716-1788) was the third son of Philip V and took the Spanish throne after the death of his brother Ferdinand VI without issue. Before becoming King of Spain (1759-1788), he ruled Naples and Sicily (1734-1759), where he modernized the kingdom and undertook important reforms. In Spain, he promoted Enlightenment reformism, promoting economic modernization, agriculture, trade, and industry. Notable among his achievements were the expulsion of the Jesuits (1767), the creation of the Bank of San Carlos (1782), and the liberalization of trade with America. He reorganized the army, improved infrastructure, and promoted national symbols such as the red and gold flag, adopted in 1785. In Madrid, he beautified the city with the Puerta de Alcalá, fountains such as Cibeles and Neptune, the Botanical Garden, and the Prado Museum, earning himself the title of "Best Mayor of Madrid" for his urban planning and modernization efforts.
