[Invited Dharma Talk - Venerable Yukjam] The Joy of Poverty - The Aesthetics of Simplicity 1) A Clear Mind and an Attitude Toward a Simplic Life Just as writing clearly is more difficult than writing well, it is important to live a life of purifying oneself by discarding desires and unnecessary attachments. Step away from the disputes of the world and do not be swayed by the complex problems encountered on the path of life; instead, reflect on yourself and maintain a clear mind. 2) The Importance of Frugality If we define wealth, true wealth is not about the quantity of material possessions, but rather letting go of greed and knowing how to be content. In other words, live a simple life, stay within your means, and accept life as it is instead of complaining about reality. 3) The Practice of Serenity and Reflection It is necessary to take time to look back on oneself and examine oneself, and to manage the desires of the mind on one's own. In particular, as one ages, controlling the mind becomes more difficult, so consistent time for self-examination is all the more necessary. Furthermore, through reading, one can gain wisdom and purify the soul, and this reading serves as a means to promote longevity and inner peace. *Invited Dharma Talk - Venerable Yukjam* 4) Caution Regarding Consumption and the Environment Excessive consumption can be considered a primary cause of environmental pollution. Living frugally is a way to save both one's mind and the environment simultaneously. Furthermore, since excessive consumption stems from excessive greed, which can lead to suffering and ruin, it is important to harbor only moderate desires and let go of others. 5) The Joy of Poverty Try to be content with what you currently have, refrain from complaining about reality, and pursue a light and peaceful life. As an extension of this, some people cling to what they currently possess and pass on material possessions to their children. However, one must realize that leaving too much to one's children can actually be detrimental to their growth.
