Arabic Grammar |Tanween | Types Of Tanween #arabicgrammer #grammar #quran Tanwīn (تنوين) is an Arabic grammatical term meaning “nunation” — the addition of an “n” sound (ن) to the end of a noun or adjective. It appears as two short vowel marks on the last letter of a word and occurs only in nouns and adjectives that are indefinite (not specific). There are three types of tanwīn, each corresponding to a different vowel sound: 1. Tanwīn al-ḍammah (conjugation of compounds) — “-un” sound Mark: ـٌ Example: كِتابٌ (book) → “a book” Indicates nominative case (الرفع). Usually used for the subject of a sentence. 2. Tanwīn al-fatḥah (consonant of the opening) — “-an” sound Mark: ـً Example: كِتابًا (book) → “a book” Indicates accusative case (النصب). Often used for direct objects or after certain prepositions (with “tanwīn fatḥ” followed by an alif, e.g., a great book). 3. Tanwīn al-kasrah (consonant al-kasrah) — “-in” sound Mark: ـٍ Example: كِتابٍ (kitābin) → “of a book” Indicates genitive case (الجرّ). Used after prepositions or to show possession (added).
