He replied, "Here I am." God said to him, "Take your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him as a sacrifice there, on one of the mountains I will show you." When they arrived at the place God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in piles. Then he bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham took the knife to kill his son; but the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham!" He answered, "Here I am." The angel commanded him, "Do not lay a hand on your son or do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld your son, your only son." Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in the bushes. He went over, took the ram, and offered it up as a sacrifice in place of his son. The angel of the Lord called to Abraham again from heaven: "I swear by myself," declares the Lord, "because you have done this, because you have not withheld your only son, I will bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the gates of enemy cities. All the nations of the earth will bless themselves in your descendants, because you have obeyed me." Word of God Psalm Ps 115:10, 15, 16-17, 18-19 R/. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. I had faith, even when I said, "How wretched I am!" Second Reading Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (8:31b-34): If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his only Son but delivered him up for us all, how will he not also give us all things with him? Who will bring any charge against God's chosen ones? God, the justifier? Who will condemn? Could it be that Christ died, indeed rose again, is at the right hand of God, and is interceding for us? Word of God Gospel A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark (9:2-10): Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain by themselves. He was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller in the world can make. Elijah and Moses appeared to them, talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus, "Teacher, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." They were terrified and did not understand what he was saying. A cloud formed and covered them, and a voice came out of the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love; listen to him." Suddenly, when they looked around, they saw no one but Jesus, alone with them. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders, "Tell no one what you have seen until the Son of Man has risen from the dead."
