The second time was worse: Juszkiewicz wanted to turn Gibson into a consumer electronics empire, bought Philips' audio division, and racked up massive debt. In May 2018, Gibson filed for bankruptcy with a debt of between $100 and $500 million. The Les Paul brand, with its guitars selling better than ever, almost disappeared due to the arrogance of trying to be something it wasn't. Gibson survived. It returned to its roots. Today it's a healthy company. But that near-fatal experience taught a lesson that goes far beyond guitars.
