Ibrahim Babangida: Military Dictator & Nigeria's Complex History

This is the story of Ibrahim Babangida, the Nigerian Military ruler who came to power in 1985 after deposing the regime of General Muhammed Buhari in a coup d'etat. When he assumed office, Babangida outlined a number of actions and policies to eliminate corruption, solve Nigeria’s serious economic problems, and hand over power to a democratically elected government by the end of 1992. Yet as part of his legacy, some people think of him as a deceitful politician who did not meet the standards he set for himself, in the time he was in power, between 1985 and 1993. During this period, human rights abuses, including ethnically based attacks, corruption became widespread and at one point the economy was in the doldrums. The press was also silenced just like during the Buhari regime. Babangida’s style of leadership earned him nicknames like ‘Maradona’, ‘Machiavelli’, ‘Master of the Game’, and ‘Evil Genius.
