Lacan and Hegel: Prof. Bjorn Quiring (University of Dublin) in conversation with Bernard E. Harcourt

Professor Björn Quiring (School of English at Trinity College Dublin, University of Dublin) presents on Lacan and Hegel in the seminar of Bernard E. Harcourt on "Les envers de Hegel" at the EHESS. Syllabus of the seminar and lectures here: https://hegel1313.law.columbia.edu/pa... Title: "Subjectivity and Phantasmatic Property: Unacknowledged Hegelianisms in Lacan's Theory of Object Relations" As is generally known, Lacan often referred to Hegel, via Alexandre Kojève, when emphasizing the foundational role of the other's desire for human subjectivity. The connections of Lacanian theory to Hegel’s notion of property, with its instrinsic connection to personhood, have remained relatively neglected and undertheorized. The presentation will take a closer look at Lacan's conception of “objet a” as a hegelianized version of D. W. Winnicott’s “transitional object” as “first possession”. Björn Quiring, professor at the University of Dublin, will be presenting. Readings: G.W.F. Hegel, Elements of the Philosophy of Right (1820), selections. Jacques Lacan, Seminar VI: Desire and Its Interpretation (1958-1959), selections. Jacques Lacan, Seminar IX: Identification (1961-1962), selections. Jacques Lacan, Seminar XIV: The Logic of Phantasy (1966-1967), selections. D.W. Winnicott, Collected Papers: Through Paediatrics to Psycho-Analysis (1959), selections.
