Günther Prien took command of U-47, a Type VIIB, in December 1938 and within a year had become the most famous U-boat captain in Germany. On the night of October 14, 1939, he threaded U-47 through the half-blocked Kirk Sound channel into the Royal Navy's main fleet anchorage at Scapa Flow, fired torpedoes into the battleship HMS Royal Oak, and slipped back out to sea. Royal Oak rolled over and sank with 833 men. Prien returned to a hero's welcome and the first Knight's Cross awarded to a U-boat captain. Goebbels gave him the nickname "the Bull of Scapa Flow," and a snorting bull went onto the conning tower. He sank around 30 ships in his career. On the night of March 7-8, 1941, U-47 disappeared while attacking convoy OB-293. All 45 men aboard were lost. The exact cause has never been confirmed.
