What is happening in Congo, one year after independence? A Congo in crisis... Four authorities share power: Kasa-Vubu, Mobutu, Ileo, and Adoula govern in Léopoldville; Tshombe in Katanga; the Lumumbists Gizenga and Gbenye have established themselves in Stanleyville, capital of the "Free Republic of Congo"; and Kalonji leads the autonomous state of South Kasai. This report begins in February 1961 in Katanga, when the death of Patrice Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of independent Congo, is announced, and the battles of Luena and Bukama begin. A fratricidal war pits Katangese gendarmes, aided by European mercenaries, against Katangese Baluba, loyal to the central government.
