How the Soviets Crushed Berlin in 1945: WWII in Berlin

One of Berlin’s most powerful and controversial landmarks, the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park is more than just a final resting place for thousands of Red Army soldiers: it’s a monument to victory, grief, propaganda, and the shaping of East German identity. In this video, I explore how the USSR defeated Nazi Germany in the brutal final months of World War II, culminating in the Battle of Berlin in 1945. From the Vistula Offensive and Seelow Heights to the fall of the Reich capital, I unpack the sheer scale of the Soviet campaign, the heavy human cost, and Soviet attacks on German civilians. At the centre of the memorial’s story is a statue of Red Army soldier Nikolai Masalov, depicted rescuing a German child while crushing a swastika underfoot. A powerful and simple image, but the reality behind the Soviet “liberation” was far more complicated, and for many Berliners, brutal. Explore the symbolism behind the memorial’s design: mourning statues, sarcophagi made from the ruins of Hitler’s Reich Chancellery (maybe), and the glorification of the Red Army set in stone in a story told by Stalin himself.
