In the heart of the Catemu Valley, the traces of an era when mining, large estates, and economic power dominated these lands of the Aconcagua Valley still survive. At the end of the 19th century, families like the García-Huidobro owned extensive agricultural lands and mining concessions that brought life and wealth to this region of Chile. From here, agricultural, mining, and rural development was spurred, profoundly transforming the valley. Decades later, amidst the great social changes the country experienced, the Agrarian Reform would forever alter the ownership of these lands… leaving behind old manor houses, estates, and buildings that are now slowly disappearing under the weight of time. But amidst all this history, there is a place that still lives on. The Huidobro Foundation Salesian Agricultural School, founded in 1949, was born precisely on these lands to educate entire generations of young farmers and the children of rural workers in the valley. A place where the old Chilean agricultural world found continuity through education, work, and technical training. Today we'll explore these old areas of Catemu, where the ruins of the past, the neglect, and the memory of a bygone era still survive among hills, trees, and forgotten buildings. Because here, it wasn't just houses that disappeared… an entire way of life in rural Chile vanished.
