The shaft work is typically provided by an electric motor, while the energy transformation occurs in the rotor (the component that distinguishes this type of machine from others). Among the existing generating machines, centrifugal pumps are the best known and most widely used, whether in water supply processes, steam plants, the oil industry, basic sanitation, ships, fire fighting, and even nuclear power plants. It should also be noted that there are hydraulic machines with the corresponding function, which is to transform hydraulic energy into mechanical work. These are known as prime movers, among which hydraulic turbines stand out.[1] Operation Cut-down view of a centrifugal pump A centrifugal pump works by transferring kinetic energy to the fluid and transforming it into potential energy, whether positional or, more frequently, pressure at the pump's discharge nozzle. This action is performed using the concepts of Bernoulli's Principle. Mechanically driven by a rotating shaft, the pump rotor's rotation transfers energy to the fluid through the rotor blades. The fluid present at the suction enters the rotor eye, a smaller diameter internal cavity, from where it flows towards the outer diameter through the channels formed between the rotor blades. The fluid leaves the rotor with considerable absolute velocity and a portion of kinetic energy, which must be converted into potential pressure energy. This is accomplished in the non-rotating parts. The most frequent form of energy recovery in the non-rotating parts is a spiral-shaped casing, known as a volute, which ends in a discharge nozzle. Another common form of energy recovery device is a series of static blades, called a diffuser. The diffuser with blades can be followed by a return channel, directing the fluid to another rotor, or to a spiral collector, very similar to a volute. The energy transferred by the centrifugal pump to the fluid is a function of the rotor diameter, the drive speed, and the rotor design. If the discharge requires even higher energy than that supplied by the pump to the fluid, there is no flow: the fluid is only pressurized. A centrifugal pump needs to be selected for a specific application: simply installing any centrifugal pump in a hydraulic system does not guarantee the system's operation. The application requires a match between the installed pump, the piping system used, and the source supplying the pumped fluid. Types Vertical Vertical centrifugal pumps are mostly built with horizontal shafts. Although pumps with vertical shafts are also manufactured, there is a class of vertical pumps in which the rotor is installed at the lower end of an extended shaft and thus submerged in the fluid. This construction is convenient when, for example, it is desired to raise water from a river or lake without submerging the drive, usually an electric motor that cannot withstand immersion. These vertical pumps are designed for installation in a well flooded with water and are called "wet well vertical pumps". Wet well vertical pumps are also called turbine-type vertical pumps. In the more distant past, pumps equipped with diffusers were designated turbine-type pumps. Since hydraulic turbines require the presence of guide vanes for control, pumps equipped with diffusers with fixed vanes were called turbine-type pumps. ##################################################### Operating Point of a Centrifugal Pump | System Curve | Pump Curve | Curve Change Operating Point of a Centrifugal Pump | System Curve | Pump Curve | Curve Change Operating Point of a Centrifugal Pump | System Curve | Pump Curve | Curve Modification pump, centrifugal pump, how a centrifugal pump works, centrifugal pump operation, manometric head, flow rate, hydraulic power, characteristic curve, pump flow rate depends on, what is BEP, maximum efficiency point, cavitation, pump curve, how to calculate pump power, what is manometric head, differential pressure of the pump, sizing of a pumping installation
