John Martyn • Live at the Collegiate Theatre [Part II] • London • 10 January 1978 • This is the unbroadcast second half of a live performance for the BBC contemporary music show, The Old Grey Whistle Test. Tracks are: 01:28 Bless The Weather 07:41 Outside In 22:19 Spencer The Rover As the second half begins, John says, “I can relax a bit now”, because he knows the broadcast section of the show is over. Relieved, he chugs on a beer, and later before Outside In, he enjoys a spliff. • In large measure thanks to the BBC, many fine performances of John Martyn in the 70’s were filmed and survive to this day in great quality. They include the first five tracks of the Collegiate Theatre concert that was broadcast by the BBC in 1978. However, this second half of the set was not part of the broadcast (which ended with Big Muff, as the credits rolled). A DVD ‘John Martyn At The BBC’, was released by Island Records in 2006. It was a treasure trove for fans of vintage JM, containing many of his best BBC performances, including footage from four Old Grey Whistle Test shows and three concert performances. It included the Collegiate Theatre concert broadcast, but again not the second half of the show. This version of Bless the Weather has been released before, as part of the John Martyn In Vision 1973-81 VHS, released by the BBC in 1982. As far as I know, the latter two tracks have not been available before. • The footage used here is salvaged from several BBC broadcasts, a BBC Timecode of the show and the ‘John Martyn In Vision 1973-81’ VHS. The quality of the footage is uneven, quite poor at times. But the audio is uniformly excellent.
