Barranco de Lazas V6.A1.VI - Canyoning Sierra de Guara - Huesca

⭐ INTRODUCTION Welcome to the complete video tutorial of the Lazas Canyon, a MUST-DO in the Guara Natural Park! This canyon is considered one of the most demanding in the area, ideal for experienced canyoners. It's long, technical, and very complete, except for the lack of water. 😍 It offers a very aesthetically pleasing route from the start: conglomerate rock, open sections, and very narrow passages. 💦 The pools are unavoidable, and at the end, you'll get wet in the river. Some pools can be navigated using opposition techniques if you're skilled, and most allow for the use of deflectors (of course, the first one is a bit tricky...). 💡 Although most people know it as the Lazas Canyon, many locally call it Huerto Mayor, a historical name that appears on old maps of the area. 🏰 Afterwards, a visit to Alquézar is a must, a medieval village considered one of the most beautiful in Spain. ___ ⭐ TECHNICAL DATA Location: Vadiello sector of the Guara Natural Park, Huesca. Difficulty: V6.A1.VI – technical and demanding Descent time: 3:00 – 3:30 hours Access time: 1:30 – 2:00 hours Return time: 30 minutes Minimum ropes: 2 x 60m Number of rappels: 20 Installations. In November 2024, the Aragonese Speleological Federation re-equipped and inspected the installations. The new installation is very well done and, at the same time, respectful of the history of the site: the old anchors can still be seen alongside the current ones. 💪 Recommended season: Avoid summer due to the heat and difficulty of the descent ⚠️Regulations: Descents are prohibited between December 1st and June 30th to protect the natural environment 🌿 Date of the descent in this tutorial: September 2025 ___ ⭐ THE APPROACH The descent of the Lazas Ravine begins from the Vadiello parking area, a common access point for canyoners in the Sierra de Guara. Information panels are located there. From there, a clearly marked trail with cairns guides hikers to the head of the ravine. Some sections are equipped with ropes and steps, facilitating the ascent in steeper or more technical areas. The approach usually takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on the group's pace and stops to enjoy the scenery. ___ ⭐ THE DESCENT The canyon has 3 distinct sections: 1. First part: initial drops 2. Second part: technical section with a 170m vertical drop. This part demands technique and precision: it combines a deviation, a couple of pendulums that add dynamism, and rope retrievals that require extra strength due to the inevitable friction on the rock. 3. Third part: multiple drops until the confluence with the Isarre Canyon. ___ ⭐ THE RETURN There are several options to return to the parking area. In our case, we proceeded along the river, where we found a rappel and some downclimbs. Therefore, we didn't have to remove our gear. Then we crossed the river, positioning ourselves on the right bank (orographic right), and climbed until we reached the main path. Pay attention when crossing the river and while climbing; the path may be obscured by vegetation. ⏱️ Approximate duration: 30 minutes if you don't lose your bearings. ___ ⭐ HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DESCENT The legendary 170m central vertical section, divided into sections, is one of the most impressive moments of the canyon. The rock is a typical Guara conglomerate, offering very different textures. You can observe local wildlife, such as mountain goats, vultures, and eagles that inhabit the area. ___ ❤️ SUPPORT THE CHANNEL If this tutorial helped you, give it a like, subscribe, and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss our videos of canyoning, via ferratas, and mountain adventures.
