Wilhelm Maybach is one of the most overlooked figures in world industrial history. Yet, without him, there would be no motorcycle, no motorboat, no modern airship, and no Mercedes brand as we know it. This biographical documentary, in ten parts, retraces the extraordinary life of this Württemberg orphan who, at the turn of the twentieth century, became the most influential engine manufacturer of his time. Born in 1846 in Heilbronn, Wilhelm Maybach lost his parents at the age of ten and was taken in by a philanthropic institution in Reutlingen, where the theologian and social reformer Gustav Werner recognized his exceptional technical talent. It was there that he met Gottlieb Daimler, with whom he would form one of the most decisive partnerships in the history of technology. Together, in a glass-enclosed greenhouse transformed into a secret laboratory in Cannstatt, they designed the first high-speed internal combustion engine, the first motorcycle, the first motorboat, and the first powered aircraft in history. This documentary explores each step of this extraordinary journey: the formative years at the Bruderhaus in Reutlingen, the collaboration with Daimler at the Deutsche Gas-Motoren-Fabrik Deutz in Cologne alongside Nikolaus Otto, the secret creation of the Standuhr engine in the Cannstatt greenhouse, the repeated betrayals by the shareholders of Daimler Motorengesellschaft, the years of disgrace in the ballroom of a provincial hotel where the Phoenix engine and the jet carburetor were nevertheless born, the triumph of the 35-horsepower Mercedes on the roads of the French Riviera, and finally the founding of Maybach Motorenbau GmbH in Friedrichshafen, where father and son built the engines that powered the largest airships in history. This documentary film draws on reliable historical sources and presents, in a rigorous yet engaging way, the inventions, personal choices, and trials of a man whose natural discretion long obscured his true greatness. The French engineers of the time were not mistaken: they called him the king of builders. History has proven them right, but with a delay of several generations.
